John Hinckley
"I will prove my love for you through a historic act. I will probably die for what I am about to do." (from Hinckley's letter to Jodie Foster)
Gun Used: .38-calibre
handgun
Attempted Assassination: President Ronald Reagan
Background Information: John Hinckley Jr.'s attempt to kill Reagan was
due to his infatuation with the movie star Jodie Foster. His obsession with
Foster was so great that he attempted to assassinate President Reagan on March
30th 1981, in order to impress her. The attempt probably influenced gun control
the most in the last 50 years in the US. Hinckley has done nothing more than
present a valid driver's license to purchase his gun. He based the assassination
on an action of the main character in "Taxi Driver", a movie in which
Foster starred, who also wished to commit a political assassination. On March
30th Hinckley fired 6 shots at President Reagan as he stood outside the
Washington Hilton Hotel. One ht the shots hit Reagan and injured him. On August
10th 1981 Hinckley was charged with the attempted assassination of the
president.
